We are always looking for talented researchers and have a number of fully-funded positions available. We also support interested candidates in applying for  various personal scholarships…get in touch!

Our team is highly multidisciplinary, with a diverse skillset (See more). We are always on the lookout for exceptional candidates (both at the graduate and undergraduate levels) with a strong theoretical background for a variety of projects with knowledge of electronics, physics or materials science, a keen interest in optics and photonic technologies, and a desire to develop advanced skills in experimental photonics, materials design and discovery, computational electromagnetic modeling, electron and optical microscopy and cleanroom-based nanofabrication.

Externally funded graduate students or Self-funded Postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to apply. All admitted graduate students will have financial aid, including teaching, research assistantships, and/or scholarships. Please indicate if you have or have applied for, or plan to apply for any funding or scholarship (e.g., NSERC, international external funding, etc.)

NOTE: Since the number of applicants who contact us is extremely high, we will only respond to applicants who have passed the initial screening process and are a suitable match to current job openings at the Nanoscale Optics Lab.

NSERC Scholarships:

  • open to students who are citizens or permanent residents of Canada

  • departmental deadline in late September-early October

  • MSc level scholarships: $17,500 (CGSM) per year

  • PhD level scholarships: $21,000 (PGSD) or $35,000 (CGSD) per year

  • during the tenure of the NSERC scholarship, U of A provides a top up award with a value equal to tuition & fees

  • CGSM and PGSD awardees are also offered a part-time graduate assistantship

Alberta Innovates Scholarships:

  • open to International and Canadian students

  • deadline usually in early February

  • students must be working in one of the following research areas: nanoscale physics, information and communication technology, omics (genomics, proteomics, etc.), energy, or the environment

  • $26,500-$31,500 per year

  • awardees are also offered a part-time graduate assistantship

  • citizens and permanent residents of Canada who hold NSERC CGS or PGS scholarships may apply for an AI top-up to the NSERC scholarship

Queen Elizabeth II (QE II) MSc Scholarship:

  • eligible students are nominated by the department (no application is required)

  • open to students who are citizens or permanent residents of Canada

  • $10,800 for one year

  • students are also offered a part-time graduate assistantship

  • the awardee's supervisor will still pay a regular summer stipend

​

Queen Elizabeth II (QE II) PhD Scholarship:

  • eligible students are nominated by the department (no application is required)

  • open to students who are citizens or permanent residents of Canada

  • $15,000 for one year

  • students are also offered a part-time graduate assistantship

  • the awardee's supervisor will still pay a regular summer stipend

Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship:

  • only PhD students and postdoctoral researchers are eligible

  • open to Canadian and International students

  • $35,000 per year for students; is renewable for a second year

​

Dissertation Fellowship

  • this is for the final year of one's PhD program

  • open to Canadian and International students

  • $22,000 plus tuition & fees for one year

​

Andrew Stewart Memorial Graduate Prize

  • open to all PhD students who have completed at least 2 years of the PhD program

  • open to Canadian and International students

  • $5,000 one-time award
